The gong. The name itself brings a smile or a laugh when the word is said. In Western culture, many people associate the word ‘gong’ with a game show that appeared on TV years ago. Or they may think of the gong as used in ceremonies or in orchestras, but not necessarily for sound healing or meditation. Yea, what ever that is 😀
You may (or may not) have heard of something called a gong bath. I was not immediately familiar for what this consisted of before I became exposed to the practice, but, it’s a form of sound healing where the person is bathed in the sound and sound waves of the gong (yes, you stay clothed 😉 ).
There are many types of gongs that are used for sound healing. Wind gongs, tiger gongs, chau gongs, planet gongs, the list can go on, just Google ‘types of gongs‘. The gong that is used here at Soul Sounds Healing is a chau gong. This is a 34 inch gong that has a deep resonate sound that takes you a different universe when hearing the sound vibrations. Some practitioners use one gong others may use two or more. Many people who attend a gong meditation love to feel the healing power of the vibrations swarm over and through them. The sound waves enter into the body and aura and can release emotional and physical blockages that one may be holding onto – consciously or more likely, unconsciously.
The great thing about experiencing a gong meditation is that it is mostly effortless. You come to relax your mind and body and focus on the sounds and feelings of the vibrations within. Some people can experience a range of emotions, for example, whatever it is that is causing you to have the block is released from your psyche. It is common to feel invigorated, lighter, relaxed, or calm as the body and soul releases what is holding you back.
What is also great about a ‘gong meditation‘ is that ‘meditation’, in and of itself can be difficult for many people. It can make you uncomfortable in your own skin, especially when just starting out, and this is perfectly normal. However, when participating in a gong meditation, you can more easily enter into a state of relaxation and deep calm by listening to the sounds of the overtones and undertones as the vibrations and sounds take you to another world. It allows your mind to relax, release and let go, which has many beneficial healing elements.
So, if your looking for something new, different and healing, I highly encourage you to attend a gong meditation, you won’t be sorry!
If you have attended a session, I’d love to hear about it and how it helped! Please feel free to share in the comments below!
