So, What Exactly is a Gong Meditation?

Chau GongThe gong. The name itself brings a smile or a laugh when the word is said. In Western culture, many people associate the word ‘gong’ with a game show that appeared on TV years ago. Or they may think of the gong as used in ceremonies or in orchestras, but not necessarily for sound healing or meditation. Yea, what ever that is 😀

You may (or may not) have heard of something called a gong bath. I was not immediately familiar for what this consisted of before I became exposed to the practice, but, it’s a form of sound healing where the person is bathed in the sound and sound waves of the gong (yes, you stay clothed 😉 ).

There are many types of gongs that are used for sound healing. Wind gongs, tiger gongs, chau gongs, planet gongs, the list can go on, just Google ‘types of gongs‘. The gong that is used here at Soul Sounds Healing is a chau gong.  This is a 34 inch gong that has a deep resonate sound that takes you a different universe when hearing the sound vibrations.  Some practitioners use one gong others may use two or more.  Many people who attend a gong meditation love to feel the healing power of the vibrations swarm over and through them. The sound waves enter into the body and aura and can release emotional and physical blockages that one may be holding onto – consciously or more likely, unconsciously.

The great thing about experiencing a gong meditation is that it is mostly effortless. You come to relax your mind and body and focus on the sounds and feelings of the vibrations within. Some people can experience a range of emotions, for example, whatever it is that is causing you to have the block is released from your psyche. It is common to feel invigorated, lighter, relaxed, or calm as the body and soul releases what is holding you back.

What is also great about a ‘gong meditation‘ is that ‘meditation’, in and of itself can be difficult for many people.  It can make you uncomfortable in your own skin, especially when just starting out, and this is perfectly normal. However, when participating in a gong meditation, you can more easily enter into a state of relaxation and deep calm by listening to the sounds of the overtones and undertones as the vibrations and sounds take you to another world. It allows your mind to relax, release and let go, which has many beneficial healing elements.

So, if your looking for something new, different and healing, I highly encourage you to attend a gong meditation, you won’t be sorry!

If you have attended a session, I’d love to hear about it and how it helped! Please feel free to share in the comments below!

Space Clearing Your Home or Office

So, you bought a new home, moved to a new apartment, moved to a new office or just hosted a big family get together or party AND the energy in your home feels off. You may be feeling a certain way and not realize the accumulated left over energy from your guests or work colleagues has affected you.   This is a great time to conduct a space clearing. The reason is because we all have energy and that energy can be left in our every day spaces. This accumulation of energy left in our spaces can be negative or heavy, leaving the ‘chi’ and energy in our spaces affected. soul sounds

So, it’s always a good idea to clear out the space and left over energies so they do not block us or add negative energy.

To do this, you can perform a space clearing ritual called “smudging”. Smudging is the act of burning herbs such as white sage, sweet grass or palo santo wood using a positive intention while going clockwise room to room wafting the smoke throughout the rooms, closets and corners (especially because energy can accumulate in corners). Be sure to open the windows so the smoke and energies can leave the space.

Smudging your space should be a ritualistic event and can be done as often as you’d like. At the end of your space clearing session, be sure to “sage” or “smudge” yourself or your family. It can also help to clear out the stuck energies with the use of a singing bowl or tingsha. The sound waves help to move out any hard to move stuck energy.

Don’t be discouraged if you’ve never done this before. Anyone can do it and it’s easy to find supplies to smudge. Just look on Amazon or your local health/holistic store.

Here is a list of supplies you may want:

  1. White sage or sweet grass bundles or even lavender or palo santo wood
  2. Abalone shell (to catch the ashes)
  3. Feather
  4. Lighter

So, enjoy the feeling of your new cleared space. Breathe in the feeling of your new cleared space. Feel the chi flow and your intention starting to manifest. Relax.

By the way, I conduct space clearings so if you need help the first time going about it I’m available to assist or conduct the clearing if you are just not up to it!

Happy smudging!!

Healing the Body Using Tuning Forks, say Whaaa?

weightedtuningforkA few months back, I had no idea that sound healing even existed.  Not to mention, sound healing with tuning forks! However, I had attended a crystal bowl meditation session with a dear friend and after experiencing this, I had new found passion that was calling me.   On this new journey, I read and began research on the sound concept and came across the use of tuning forks for healing and tuning the human biofield or aura (area 5-6 ft around the body).

So what the heck is a tuning fork and how is it used for sound healing? According to Dr. John Beaulieu, an expert in the study of sound healing, he describes how the use of tuning forks can help the body:

The sound of your nervous system is an indicator of your current internal state and carries a lot of information. If you’re very stressed, for example, it will sound more shrill and intense. If you’re relaxed, it will sound more flowing and soft. Once you become used to the sound of your nervous system, you can use tuning forks to help you retune your body. More advanced users are able to open the gateway to different states of consciousness. It’s a tool to help you get in touch with your inner landscape and live with more awareness and richness. If you have health issues, the application of tuning forks to pressure points stimulates the release of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is made inside the vascular, nerve and immune cells and is rhythmically released into the surrounding tissues as a gas. It participates in the healthy functioning of all main organ systems and acts as a signaling molecule and attacking molecule neutralizing viruses, bacteria, and other free radicals. We’ve even tested it in laboratory experiments demonstrating the healing power of sound.

This theory basically states that we are made of atoms and particles, and that each part of us vibrates and this creates a sound.  The entire universe is connected on the basis that everything has a vibrational pattern or sound resonance. It has been described by those in the field as:

Every organ, cell, bone, tissue and liquid of the body, and also the electromagnetic fields which surround the body (aura), has a healthy vibratory frequency. If we are not resonating with some part of ourselves or of our surroundings, we become dissonant and therefore unhealthy. Our naturally healthy frequency becomes a frequency that vibrates without harmony, creating illness.

The use of tuning forks in the biofield or aura allows sound waves to penetrate our bodies and our energy centers or chakras to help heal the body, mind and spirit.  This is considered an alternative or holistic approach to healing, and those who have experienced sound healing with tuning forks have received great relief from every day ailments and dis-ease.  I am just beginning my practice with clients, however I encourage you to do your research and if interested, give it a try, please feel free to contact me or a local practitioner in your area.

I am currently studying with Eileen McKusick at the Biofield Tuning Institute and will complete my training in the fall of 2016.

Are you a patient of sound healing? How has it improved your life? Please feel free to share your experience in the comments below!

What is Sound Healing aka Sound Therapy?

As we experience life, our minds, bodies and energy flow can become blocked. These blockages this can lead to disease that appears and manifests in our bodies and minds. This dis-ease can show up in our bodies through different forms such as aches, pains, and soreness or more advanced diseases within our organs and bones. It can show up in our minds through depression, or other mental weaknesses blocking our chi or energy flow.

The concept of sound – vibrations at a frequency level or hertz (hz) – can penetrate our energy fields (or chakras) and our body removing the blockages. Experiencing a sound bath help to remove and alleviate the blockages within our mind, body and chakra’s allowing them to be balanced. Balancing the mind body energy allows our spirit and energy to flow more freely so we can more fully experience life without dis-ease.  The

So, what are these chakras I speak of? They are the energy wheels throughout key areas on our body – we all have them.  There are 7 main chakras and some minor chakras.  The energy centers in our bodies (chakras) can get out of balance as we experience life.  There are many healing modalities to get them back into alignment. Sound healing is one way to balance our chakras. Below is an example of the 7 main chakras:
